The story of this place
In a modest inn at Salzburger Vorstadt 15 in this Inn-river border town, Adolf Hitler was born on 20 April 1889, spending only his infancy here before the family moved on. The building's association with the man responsible for the Second World War and the Holocaust has long troubled Austria. For decades a memorial stone from Mauthausen quarry stood outside inscribed against fascism and war. In 2023 the state converted the house into a police human-rights training centre, deliberately stripping it of any capacity to become a site of pilgrimage—an attempt to neutralise its dark symbolism for good.
