The story of this place

Centennial Park's chain of ponds and lakes supports one of the most accessible bird photography locations in Sydney. The main lake hosts Australasian Grebes, Little Pied Cormorants, Purple Swamphens and Yellow-billed Spoonbills. The duck pond near the café complex often has tame ducks and coots that allow close approach. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos feed in the grassland areas each morning, while Eastern Rosellas and Rainbow Lorikeets are easily photographed in the fig trees. During winter, the park hosts Nankeen Night Herons roosting in the tall eucalyptus at dawn. A 500mm lens is ideal; a 300mm with 1.4x extender works well.
