The story of this place

Cockatoo Island's UNESCO-listed convict and industrial heritage creates a uniquely textured foreground of dry docks, machinery and sandstone buildings for harbour timelapses. The western slip provides an unobstructed view of the Parramatta River converging with the main harbour. A 2–4 hour timelapse captures the full arc of the sun moving over the CBD and bridges. Overnight setups can capture star trails arcing over the illuminated city — the island's camping facilities make this practical. Ferry traffic at peak hours creates compelling light streaks. The elevated railway precinct on the island's plateau offers the widest panoramic sweep.
