The story of this place

The Figure Eight Pools are an extraordinary geological feature — two interlocked circular pools worn into the sandstone platform by millennia of wave action, visible only at low tide. The 5.6 km return walk from Otford train station descends through coastal heath to the rock platform. The pools photograph best from an elevated position on the sandstone ledge above, looking directly down into the figure-eight shape. A polarising filter removes surface glare and reveals the pool's vivid teal interior. Access requires checking official tide charts — the NPS strongly advises visiting only 2 hours either side of low tide. The walk has been closed after incidents of rogue wave injuries.
