The story of this place
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe arrived in the small duchy of Weimar in 1775 at the duke's invitation and stayed for the rest of his life, turning the town into the epicentre of German classical culture alongside his friend Schiller. From 1782 he lived in this Baroque house on the Frauenplan, given to him by the duke, filling it with 26,000 rock and mineral specimens, an art collection and the study where he wrote much of 'Faust'. He died here on 22 March 1832, reportedly asking for 'more light'. The rooms are preserved exactly as he left them, down to the modest bed in which he died. Weimar's classical ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
