The story of this place
Hassans Walls Lookout sits at the western edge of the Blue Mountains plateau, 1,200 metres above sea level, offering a dramatic view of the Lithgow Valley and the zigzag descent of the Great Western Highway below. The lookout is unique in showing both the geological drama of the mountain edge and the human story of early industrial NSW — coal mines, railway lines and the old Zigzag Railway cutting are all visible. Sunrise from the east lights the cliff face and valley in warm gold. During autumn and winter, temperature inversions fill the Lithgow Valley with fog, creating an extraordinary ocean of cloud effect when viewed from this height.
