The story of this place

Built in 1843, the Hero of Waterloo allegedly operated a sinister shanghaiing operation: drunken patrons dropped through a trapdoor into the cellar, shackled to walls that still bear their marks, then dragged through a secret tunnel to the harbour. Victims would wake up the next day in the middle of the ocean, involuntarily recruited onto clipper ships bound for who knows where. The cellar's shackles and tunnel entrance remain visible today, and the ghost of Anne Kirkman is said to move chairs mysteriously—perhaps still looking for lost sailors.
