The story of this place

Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay is one of the Kimberley's most extraordinary natural phenomena. Massive tidal movements — up to 10 metres — force millions of litres of water through two narrow gaps in the McLarty Ranges, creating horizontal waterfall effects that can reach speeds of 10 knots. The phenomenon is best photographed from the air on a scenic helicopter or seaplane flight from Broome or Derby. The aerial perspective reveals the turquoise water churning through the red-rock gorges — a colour contrast unique to the Kimberley. Boat tours operated by Horizontal Falls Adventures take visitors through the falls on specialised jet boats. The falls reverse direction with each tide change, creating two distinct photography sessions per day.
