The story of this place

Yellow Water Billabong (Ngurrungurrudjba) is the most accessible and photographically rewarding wetland in Kakadu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The billabong is part of the South Alligator River floodplain and provides extraordinary wildlife photography: saltwater crocodiles, jabiru (black-necked stork), brolga cranes, magpie geese and over 280 bird species. Sunrise and sunset cruises depart daily from Cooinda, providing water-level access to the wetland. The golden hour light reflecting off still water with paperbark tree silhouettes creates the classic Kakadu composition. The wetland changes dramatically between the wet season (November–April) when water spreads across the floodplain and the dry season (May–October) when wildlife concentrates around remaining waterholes.
