The story of this place

For centuries the summer seat of the powerful prince-bishops of Olomouc, the Kroměříž palace was rebuilt in grand baroque after a fire in 1752. Its state rooms are filled with a princely picture gallery — including Titian's Flaying of Marsyas — and its ceremonial hall was chosen in 1848 as the meeting place of the Austrian Imperial Diet during the revolutions of that year. Beyond the palace lie two extraordinary gardens: the geometric Flower Garden of the 1660s, a masterpiece of formal design with a colonnade and rotunda, and the vast landscaped Podzámecká park. Together palace and gardens form one of the most complete surviving noble-episcopal ensembles in Europe, inscribed by UNESCO in 1998. Miloš Forman filmed Amadeus in its halls.
