The story of this place

Lake Argyle is Western Australia's largest artificial lake and Australia's second-largest freshwater reservoir by volume, created by the Ord River Dam in 1972. At full capacity, the lake covers approximately 874 square kilometres — 21 times the size of Sydney Harbour. The lake is studded with red-rock islands and peninsulas rising from the deep blue water, creating extraordinary aerial compositions. The colour contrast between the vivid blue water and the red Kimberley earth is among the most striking in Australia. Scenic flights depart from the Lake Argyle Resort and from Kununurra, offering 30-to-60-minute aerial tours. The lake supports an estimated 35,000 freshwater crocodiles and over 270 bird species. Sunset from the Lake Argyle Lookout provides elevated panoramic views.
