The story of this place

kunanyi / Mount Wellington dominates Hobart's skyline at 1,271 metres and provides one of the best locations in Australia for Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) photography. The Organ Pipes — dramatic dolerite columns on the eastern face — provide a striking foreground for aurora images. The summit is accessible by road in 30 minutes from Hobart, making it one of the most accessible dark-sky locations on the planet. During strong geomagnetic storms (Kp 5+), the aurora is visible to the naked eye as green and pink curtains in the southern sky. The summit can be 15°C colder than Hobart — always bring warm clothing.
