The story of this place

On 27 January 1756, in a third-floor apartment at Getreidegasse 9, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born to court musician Leopold Mozart. The family lived here for 26 years, and the young Wolfgang composed his first works in these rooms before touring Europe's courts as a child prodigy. He would die in Vienna in 1791 at just 35, buried in an unmarked grave. The bright yellow house is now one of the world's most visited musical museums, displaying his childhood violin, portraits, letters and the clavichord on which he is said to have composed The Magic Flute.
