The story of this place
After the horror of WWI, the League of Nations was founded in 1920 with Geneva as its seat, the first permanent body dedicated to collective security and world peace. The vast Palais des Nations was built between 1929 and 1938 in the Ariana Park. The League failed to stop Japanese, Italian and German aggression and dissolved in 1946, but its home lived on: since 1966 it has served as the European headquarters of the United Nations, hosting disarmament talks and human-rights sessions. A giant three-legged 'Broken Chair' outside protests landmines.
