The story of this place

Pulpit Rock extends like a stone finger into the Grose Valley from the main escarpment, accessible via a 5 km return walk from Govetts Leap car park. The promontory provides 270-degree panoramic views from above the valley — north to the Hawkesbury lowlands, south to the main escarpment and west across the valley to Ridgewell Bluff. The narrow platform (approximately 10m wide) forces intimate compositions with the valley dropping away on three sides. Morning mist in the valley creates spectacular cloud inversion shots. The narrow path along the promontory has no guardrails — care is essential. Sunset light from the north-west turns the sandstone amber.
