The story of this place

A resident colony of up to 20,000 Grey-headed Flying Foxes roosts in the fig and eucalyptus trees of the Botanic Garden, taking flight each evening around dusk. The spectacle of thousands of bats streaming out over Farm Cove and Sydney Harbour makes for dramatic silhouette photography with the city skyline as backdrop. A 300–500mm telephoto isolates individuals in flight against the gradient sky. The best position is the slope above Farm Cove between the Woolloomooloo Gate and the main avenue. The colony size varies seasonally — late summer brings maximum numbers after the pup season.
