Sydney Harbour Bridge at Dawn

The Harbour Bridge at dawn offers one of Australia's most iconic cityscape compositions. The blue hour before sunrise turns the steel arch into a dramatic silhouette against a gradient sky.

The story of this place

Position yourself at the Milsons Point foreshore or Lavender Bay for a classic north-facing composition with the bridge spanning the harbour. The pre-dawn blue hour lasts roughly 20 minutes and rewards patience with deep indigo tones that gradually warm. Long exposures smooth the harbour water into a mirror surface, doubling the arch in reflection. The bridge pylons frame the Opera House perfectly from the eastern approach on Cumberland Street. Avoid peak summer mornings when cruise ships disrupt the reflections. A wide-angle lens between 16–24mm captures the full arch and its reflection simultaneously.
