The story of this place

Watsons Bay sits at South Head, the northern entrance to Sydney Harbour. But its most famous landmark is The Gap—a cliff face that has become Australia's most notorious suicide location. An estimated 50 people die here each year, though 'Angel of The Gap' Don Ritchie saved at least 160 people between 1964 and 2012 by approaching those standing at the edge and offering them a cup of tea. The Gap is also where the ship Dunbar crashed in 1857, killing 121 people in Australia's worst peacetime maritime disaster. One survivor, James Johnson, clung to a rock ledge until rescued. Today, Watsons Bay is better known for Doyle's Restaurant and the ferry trip from Circular Quay.
