Wattamolla Beach, Royal National Park

A coastal lagoon sealed from the ocean by a sandbar, Wattamolla's waterfall tumbles directly onto the beach — one of the most unusual waterfall-meets-sea compositions in Australia.

The story of this place

Wattamolla is one of the coast's most photographically distinctive locations, where a freshwater lagoon builds behind a sandbar until it overflows as a waterfall directly onto the beach and ocean rocks below. The waterfall height varies from a trickle to 4 metres depending on recent rainfall. A wide-angle shot from the south beach captures the falls, lagoon, cliffs and ocean simultaneously. Midsummer days see the lagoon packed with swimmers, so dawn access before 7am provides solitude. The coastal heath above the cliffs adds purple and yellow wildflower foreground between September and November. Access is via the Curra Moors fire trail from Bundeena Road.
